Glaze Shelves are full of our work

The glaze shelves are looking beautiful with shiny and matte surfaces of all sorts.
We got an early start and have been spoiled with being the only class glazing, but soon all the other sections will be glazing and we will be taking  bit of a "break" for you all to focus on the Architectural project.  Please continue to make tests and test tiles of glazes that you may want to experiment with.

Sneak Peak

Hello all,
This is a reminder that next Thursday we are having a vocabulary quiz of terms 1-10 promptly at the beginning of class time.  We will then proceed to the days demo which is using the extruder to create forms mechanically.

There will be homework, this is a sneak peak of that assignment.  You will be asked to design the sides of the boxes that we will make in class on October 1st.  Please research images of patterns or designs that are important to you, examples include aztec, middle eastern, asian, or modern designs using squares, curved lines, or triangles, anything can be used, but I want this to be thought out and fully realized by next class.  Use color in your design (as seen in the image below) if you intend the final product to have color.  I will be asking that you adhere to this design when you build your box and expect the drawings to be translated onto the clay surface.

So what inspires you?  Something as simple as google image searching "pattern" might help you with this assignment.

Start a Ceramics Club at CCNY

This may be of interest to some of you, hopefully all of you.
Having a club at CCNY gives you a budget for interesting things such as visiting artists, field trips, and materials for creating art and involving the entire college community.  You will also be able to sell your ceramics by setting up a table in the NAC etc.  If any of you are interested here is information on how to begin.

Good afternoon all,

Thank you for your interest in starting a new club. As stated in a broadcasted email, the new club registration process will last from September 4th, 2015 until Thursday October 1st, 2015. There are several steps that the executive board officers need to complete to obtain club status on campus. They are listed as follows:

1) Two executive board officers MUST attend a mandatory club orientation to learn more about the club regulations and policies. You MUST RSVP and attend an orientation by signing up for this orientation, please fill out the form here.
2) You MUST fill out information about your club, executive board officers, and members through the form here
3) You MUST submit a properly completed Adviser Commitment Form / SSC Card using the link here and uploading the documents by using the upload password of clubr3g15. You MUST refer to the instruction sheet attached to this email to help guide you in completing it properly. The document is attached to this email.
4) You MUST upload your Club's Constitution using the link here and uploading the document by using the upload password of clubr3g15. A model Constitution is attached to this email to help guide you in creating your own club's constitution.

All of this information is also listed in an attached Instruction Sheet.

Please note: Club executives must be registered to take classes for both the Fall 2015 and Spring 2016 semesters and undergraduate executives must have a GPA of 2.0 or higher and Graduate executives must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

If you have any questions in regards to the process, please email the Club Relations team at clubreg@ccny.cuny.edu.

Best,
Andrew Murjas

Preview of the Architectural Project

As you know, there are two "large" projects in addition to the smaller demo projects that we are completing (primarily) in class, one is an architectural project.  This will be discussed in detail on October 1st, but those who are thinking ahead might want to begin looking up brick (or brick-like) structures which you think that you can easily reproduce in clay.  Keep it simple, but not too simple.  See the image below to understand how a photo of a church served as inspiration for the ceramic replica which borrows its essential design from the original.

Week Two Recap and no class on the 10th

Great job on the slab projects everyone!  I wanted to post some photos of the works in progress which are below.

Remember, next week, September 10th, there is no class due to it being a Monday schedule, however I expect everyone to come in during open studio hours. The coil project with handle needs to be completed as well as some sketches for designs that you may be interested in doing on future and current projects.

Next class (September 17th) we will be learning how to recycle clay and going over the vocabulary terms.  I hope that some of our works are fired before then because I am also going to demonstrate how to glaze.  The hollow forms demo project #5 is cancelled, and everyone is excused from the project because I have observed that the class works well independently and I will simply be available for help while we work on individual projects next class period.

I hope everyone enjoys their holiday weekend and a break from class next week.
